LENTEN GROUPS
The Way of the Cross
The season of Lent has for centuries been a time when Christians take a deeper look
at personal faith. This year, we invite you to explore with a small group of others
(8-12 people) what Jesus meant when he said “take up your cross and follow me”
(Mark 8:34). Small groups will meet for five weekly sessions in homes across the
greater Winston-Salem area for fellowship, Bible study, and discussion. Last year,
many participants said “It felt like an early Christian church setting.” Don’t miss out
on one of the 2012 Lenten Small Groups.
February 19 | Covered Dish Kickoff, 6:00 pm / (optional kickoff, Wednesday, February 22, 1:00 pm)
February 26 – March 3 | Following God’s Will
March 4-10 | Who is Jesus?
March 11-16 | The Burden
March 17-24 | Forgiven
March 25-31 | Finished
April 1-6 (Holy Week) | Meditative Stations of the Cross by local artists
Participant books are available for pickup in Glad Tidings Books and Gifts on Sunday morning, February 26. If you are unable to collect your booklet on Sunday, we will have your copy at your first small group meeting.
SPIRIT-LIFE GROUPS (Sunday Evenings)
Jesus Creed: Loving God, Loving Others
When Jesus was asked what the most important commandment was, he said love God and love others. With the help of Scot McKnight’s book, The Jesus Creed, we will explore how spiritual formation begins with loving God and loving others, how that impacts our relationships and how we live, with the goals of growing closer to Christ and becoming closer to the person God created each of us to be. We will utilize McKnight’s book and accompanying study guide and complementary DVD in the seven-week series. This study will meet:
Sunday, February 12, 19, 26; March 4, 11, 18, 25 (5:00-7:00pm) / Robert Esleeck, facilitator
Blessed Earth: Hope for Creation & Humanity
Following Jesus is good for the planet - or should be, at least. This is the radical, yet solidly biblical premise of the Blessed Earth, a creative and compelling call for Christians to embrace sustainable living out of love for God, neighbor, and all of creation. This study will fit well with our annual Earth Day Dinner, Silas Creek Cleanup Day, and planting the Food Bank Garden. This four-week study begins:
Sunday, April 15 (5:00-7: 00 pm) / Rev. Jonathan Brake & Marjorie Guilford, facilitators
QUARTERLY GROUP
Reading Group: Weavings
Are you familiar with the quarterly publication from Upper Room? The title seems strange until you realize the publication explores how God’s life and human life are “woven” together in the world. Each issue focuses on a central theme and includes the philosophies of a broad range of Christian writers. Each article provides reading that leaves you wanting to compare insights with other readers…that is why we have a “small group” called Weavings! This small group will meet as follows:
March 22, May 24 (6:00-8:00 pm) / Barbara Sterchi, facilitator
