Frequently Asked Questions from Parents
What activities and events do you have for children?
We think that effective ministry involves more than a full schedule of events. Our goal is to provide meaningful activities, not to “push a calendar.” The programs and activities we do offer are designed to nurture your child’s faith. Our Sunday School classes meet weekly, and the children’s choir rehearses each Wednesday. We also offer regular Bible studies, Vacation Bible School, mission and community enrichment opportunities, and special seasonal ministries.
How do you help my child develop spiritually, and what will my child learn?
We help children develop their faith through a well-rounded program of worship, mission involvement, education, and more. Children learn about the love of God, the ministry of Jesus, and other basics of the Christian life. Our Sunday School and Bible study classes use a carefully screened curriculum, with material appropriate for the child’s age and development. Often this curriculum is published by Cokesbury, an agency of the United Methodist Church.
What happens during the children’s worship service?
We recognize that it can be difficult for some children to sit quietly through an adult worship service. During the 11:00 service, Children’s Worship is offered for four-year old through first grade children. The format for Children’s Worship varies from week to week, but usually includes a Bible story, prayer, craft, and some play time. Children may be picked up in room 209 after the adult worship service ends. Plans are underway to expand Children’s Worship in the fall of 2010 to include second through fifth graders.
How do I know that my child will be safe?
We know how much you value your child, and we care about them too. Your child’s safety is our highest priority. Our Safe Sanctuary policy provides guidelines to protect children and youth, and on Sunday mornings we use an automated check-in system to enhance security. Parents of younger children have the option of carrying a church-provided pager, allowing nursery staff to contact them if necessary.
How do I know where to bring my child on Sunday morning?
Children’s Sunday School classes are located on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the children’s ministry wing (above the Foundations at 4 ½ Street childcare center). Nursery care during worship services is also available on the 2nd floor of the children’s ministry wing. The church information desk is located at the 4 ½ Street entrance, or you can ask a greeter for directions.
Can I stay with my child?
Of course. You are welcome to attend Sunday School or Children’s Worship with your child, especially if your child is having trouble adjusting to a new environment.
Do you discipline children if they misbehave?
No corporal punishment or harsh words are used on children. If a child refuses to cooperate or becomes overly disruptive, he or she will be removed from the classroom and the parent will be contacted.
Who can I contact for more information?
Please contact Reverend Abby Hedgecock (397-1331).
